The South View Conservation Area was designated in October 2006 by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council in recognition of the area’s special architectural and historic character. At the same time, an Article 4(2) Direction was introduced, and policies for the Conservation Area were formally adopted as a Supplementary Planning Document (SPD).
Once an area is designated as a Conservation Area, the Local Planning Authority has a statutory duty to ensure that its special character and appearance are preserved or enhanced. This is a key consideration when assessing planning applications within the area.
Not all properties in South View are subject to the same level of control under the Article 4(2) Direction. While planning permission may be required for certain types of work on all properties, homes that are period properties or have retained their original architectural features are subject to more stringent controls. This helps protect traditional details that contribute most strongly to the character of the Conservation Area.
These properties are shown in yellow on the Conservation Area map. Properties shown in white are generally subject to fewer restrictions.
The guidance document below explains when planning permission may be required, depending on whether your property is shown in yellow or white on the map.
